Infrastructure upgrade for DoD-relevant research on long-lived marine vertebrates

Abstract

UC Santa Cruz PI, Dr. Roxanne Beltran, is requesting a research platform in the form of a cost-effective, emissions-free transportation from UCSC to the Año Nuevo elephant seal colony and other locations within Monterey Bay. The UCSC team currently transports students and researchers in a university-owned gasoline-powered pickup truck, which was acquired with ONR DURIP in 2005. The proposed infrastructure investment will enable critical DoD-relevant basic research, facilitate student engagement, and increase UCSC#s ability to train the next generation of underrepresented students that will join the STEM and/or DoD workforce. Further, as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, UC Santa Cruz is particularly well-positioned to engage marginalized students in hands-on fieldwork with marine mammals.
