STEM Dolphin Doctor: Place-Based Marine Mammal STEM Experiences

Abstract

We propose an expansion of our educational program titled Dolphin Doctor: On the Front Lines of Marine Mammal Medicine which focuses on marine mammal medical research and technology and introduces students to ocean-based STEM principles. Additional ONR funding will allow us to develop and implement 10 in-person, place-based workshops at Naval Base Point Loma (NBPL) in each project year. The unique workshops will provide unprecedented opportunities for youth to experience a marine mammal demonstration paired with hands-on learning activities, including a mock dolphin or sea lion health exam, pulse oximeter/ECG technology testing, and hydrophone usage and spectral analysis. The new programs will be offered through our partner organizations: San Diego military connected schools, the Ocean Discovery Institute (ODI), and the Fleet Science Center#s BE WiSE program. In addition, we will expand our ongoing programmingwith Outdoor Outreach (OO) and our other community partners to engage an additional 3,000 students per year with hands-on, direct engagement in our workshops, and another >10,000 people at community events. With support from ONR, we have established the foundation for a successful third phase of the Dolphin Doctor program with curriculum, activities, and partnerships in place to immediately respond to the critical need for immersive STEM learning opportunities based on U.S. Navy science, and now with the help of Navy dolphins and sea lions.
