Rhode Island RISEUP 2.0
Abstract
The University of Alaska Fairbanks, the University of Hawai#i, and the University of Rhode Island have been working together successfully as a partnership since 2022. The first year of this project was marked by the launch of the four core programs at each university, piloting of initial tri-state collaborations, and identification of investment opportunities for building a world class model for solving dual-use maritime challenges. All four programs are launched in each state, and programmatic collaboration is deepening. Example outcomes include UAF undergrads who developed a cold-weather flight suit for pilots that need to eject in extreme conditions, URI graduate working on advanced solutions for underwater videography, and a Hawai#i post-doc who is designing a desalination process using solar thermal conversion. Collectively we#ve trained or supported over 175 individuals, and we#ve deployed over $600,000 in funding to our states# most promising innovators and entrepreneurs. This proposal for the second phase of RISEUP will continue building on the momentum gained in the first year, mature all or programs to ensure best possible outcomes, and create new pilots to explore additional ways for the program to positively effect the economies of all three states, technology advancement, job growth and national security.
