Research on HLA Typing to Support Military Contingency
Abstract
The objective of this grant is to develop the scientific, medical and technological advances required to support contingencies caused by injury to the blood-forming system from toxic substances occurring during military conflict, terrorist acts or accidents. Theaim is to provide HLA-matched hematopoietic progenitor cells or matched platelets for casualties from healthy donors during a contingency response. Establish partnerships and coordinates with key national and international organizations in the field of bone marrow transplant and HLA typing. Increase participation of DoD organizations in the DoD Bone Marrow consortium. The research foci included in this proposal include: #increasing recruitment of DoD volunteer hematopoietic stem cell donors; increasing relevant donors to serve the ethnically diverse population like the U.S. Warfighter#refining the operation of the DoD Donor Center to cope with a contingency situation using volunteers from the DoD registry selected for civilian patients as a model to refine and speed the process #enhancing methods to rapidly and accurately determine high resolution HLA assignments of newly recruited DoD volunteers as a model for pre-deployment cost-effective HLA testing#continue to elucidate and sequence new HLA alleles to add to GeneBank (World Health Organization) #piloting donor searches of unrelated registries and military families to calculate the likelihood of matches in deployed military #piloting the development of a bank of volunteer donors of HLA-matched platelets#expanding knowledge of HLA diversity in minority populations to facilitate searches that may require an international component #pursuing research into factors besides HLA that might impact the outcome of hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation#Evaluate potential and logistics of HLA typing militarypersonnel prior to deployment#Determine the likelihood of military personnel finding a suitable donor if exposed to blood stem celltoxic agents. This will include HLA, ABO Blood Group Typing and Cytomegalo virus (CMV) Testing
