Broadening Participation in STEM Through Ocean Exploration in the Pacific

Abstract

This proposal, Broadening Participation in STEM Through Ocean Exploration in the Pacific, seeks funding for the continuation of longstanding (~12 years) ONR-funded programs that provide transformative learning experiences for students, educators, and early career professionals aboard sea-going research expeditions. This program can additionally serve as a conduit to broadly promote ONR’s commitment to STEM education through online platforms that reach millions annually. Specifically, the program will support Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) to implement: (1) sea-going STEM internships for undergraduate, graduate, and community college students; (2) sea-going fellowships for K-12 and informal educators; (3) skills, leadership, and mentoring training for program participants; and (4) digital and online outreach to broadly promote workforce role modeling and ONR’s funding of the programs through multimedia developed for nautiluslive.org and OET’s well-followed social media platforms. The core through-goals in all aspects of the program will be to create more opportunities for students to be inspired by and trained in STEM vocations and skillsets (e.g., mechanical and electrical engineering, marine/ ocean science, marine acoustics and hydrography, marine navigation, systems engineering, leadership and mentoring, etc); to gain an understanding of how those vocations might be possible through military and various STEM career pathways; and, importantly, to provide those opportunities for students that are largely from underrepresented groups in STEM fields.
