STEM: Southern Illinois University Aviation Human Factors (SIENNA)
Abstract
Southern Illinois University Carbondale proposes to leverage Office of Naval Research (ONR) STEM funding to strengthen the university#s relationship with the ONR science and technology workforce; to enable greater STEM-related outreach to local underrepresented high school student populations; and to establish a new Aviation Human Factors minor. This new minor will facilitate student employment in the Department of the Navy (DON) workforce by providing subject matter expertise in research areas such as aviation safety, human performance, and user interfaces in modern aircraft/weapon systems design. In order to achieve these goals, SIU will use ONR funding to develop the new Aviation Human Factors minor, procure virtual reality equipment to advance human factors research and provide an immersive experience during outreach activities to underrepresented populations in the Southern Illinois region. SIU would like to become a part of the DON STEM ecosystem as an external stakeholder withthe goal to increase the efficacy of naval STEM programsand initiatives. The goals of this proposal align with the objectives of naval STEM to inspire, empower, advance, and celebrate. Previous and ongoing engagement with Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) and Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) willenable SIU and DON to leverage existing relationships and research efforts to ensure that funding achieves the intended ONR STEM goals.
