The Navy League STEM Exposition kicks off its annual Sea-Air-Space event with students in grades 5-12 participating in hands on activities focused on science, technology, engineering, and math.
Abstract
The Navy League of the United States (NLUS) believes that#introducing and engaging youth with programs that link the knowledge, skills and competencies of a#science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)#education with the excitement of#real-world#interactive applications#and career opportunities#will inspire and motivate them to pursue STEM-related degrees and careers,#in#both the#naval#and the civilian workforce.#We will target audiences that may not have considered the sea services and to show how breath and scope of career options. Sea-Air-Space, held annually, is the largest maritime exposition in North America. It was established as a forum to engage#the U.S. defense industrial base, private-sector and key military decision makers at an innovative, educational, and professional level focused on maritime readiness. To promote and sustain a strong naval presence into the future, professional workforce development,#with a special emphasis on the areas of STEM.#This is to maintain and have access to a strong workforce pipeline, as fewer students are graduating with the preparation, interest and knowledge needed to pursue STEM careers.#Middle and high school students need#to be introduced to the opportunity and ranges of naval careers. When teachers and caregivers have a better understanding ofthe varied opportunities that the sea services have to offer, they can help students to career paths that they might not have considered. The Navy League is also heavily promoting the event to local Sea Cadet units, which have shown an active interest in the sea services and are a prime audience for a naval STEM event. To address the growing problem of a diminishing technician pipeline and toimprove the quality and the quantity of the future STEM workforce, the Navy League STEM Institute will host its annual Naval STEM Exposition on April 7, 2024, the kickoff of the Navy League#s Sea-Air-Space Exposition.#The event highlights the importance of Naval STEM careers by highlighting Navy and Marine Corps STEM skill sets, career opportunities, facilities, personnel, and best practice programs. The Naval STEM Exposition will utilize a diverse group of experienced STEM professionals including Navy and Marine Corps personnel (uniformed, civilian, active duty and retired), STEM laboratories and contractor organizations who will engage with middle school and high school students in an informal learning environment in hands-on activities and career exploration.##Imperative to thesuccess of the STEM Exposition is providing a safe learning environment, one that inspires learning and exploration, and that is inclusive particularly of underserved and under-represented communities. To measure the success and effectiveness#of the Naval STEM Exposition, both exhibitors and attendees will be given#exit#surveys that#will help evaluate#their experience at the event.##The survey will be conducted electronically on iPads by Sea Cadets as the attendees exit the event and e-mailed to attendees and exhibitors after. We hope the peer-to-peer involvement will give us a higher response from students. The survey questionnaire will include multiple choice questions and ranking scale systems that will allow for a more complete and rounded evaluation. A successful event#for attendees#will be defined as a high level of meaningful discussions and educational takeaways, as well as an increased level of interest in the sea service STEM fields#based on responses to their level of knowledge before and after the event.# Exhibitors will be defined as establishing a pipeline of STEM-interested students, which includes offering information about pursuing a STEM education, exchanging STEM program information, and#the perception that they inspired students about seriously pursuing a STEM career.
