STEM: BodySMART: An ONR-Credentialed STEM Program in Biometrics and Data Science to Enhance Human Performance and Safety in a SMART World
Abstract
BodySMART is a 4-unit project-based and standards-aligned program designed for grades 6 - 12 that places Human Performance and Safety in the context of a world dominated by networks and connected devices. It provides students with an authentic, working understanding of key areas of human performance and safety relevant to the Navy, and how biometric devices and advances in data science can beused to improve them; while introducing them to career role models in the Navy and in government-contracted industries that are leaders in these critical fields. BodySMART is delivered through Scoutlier, a universally-accessible ONR-funded learning platform that has been shown to improve career-relevant learning and skills, with the greatest gains made by students that are traditionally underserved, including those in military-connected communities. The program also includes the innovative, low-cost BodySMART kit that provides students opportunities to design and build functional prototypes of eHealth solutions. It will be piloted prior to the 2024 - 2025 school year and deployed at scale in partnership with community-based organizations in Tampa, FL (Foundation for Community Driven Innovation, FCDI) and San Diego, CA, (San Diego County Office of Education, SDCOE) that serve very diverse, military-connected students. Student participation and engagement in the program will be evaluated and optimized using Scoutlier#s machine learning-driven EngagED Engine, and those students that complete the program will be provided authenticated ONR STEM microcredentials to support their academic and professional development.
