D ENTERPRISE UPR
Abstract
There has been limited progress on increasing diversity in the ocean sciences over the past 40 years, causing the United States of America and the Office of Naval Research to miss out on some of the country#s best talent to address today#s leading problems in the ocean sciences. The broader D-ENTERPRISE initiative aims to increase diversity and inclusion in the ocean sciences through establishing a collaborative network of regional hubs between leading research universities and minority serving institutions complete with direct support and mentoring of students and faculty. Within this D-ENTERPRISE network, the East Coast Division proposes to establish the Inclusion and Belonging in Ocean Science (IBOS) Collaborative between the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez, University of Massachusetts Boston, and University of Rhode Island. The IBOS Collaborative aims to support annual cohorts of undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds in the ocean sciences with assistantships, mentored research opportunities, monthly professional development, and an annual trip to explore opportunities in the ocean sciences between our institutions. These students will also engage with local high school students to share their experiences and potential opportunities in the ocean sciences and all monthly programming will be open to any students within the respective universities to increase the impacts of the proposed funded work. All aspects of the IBOS collaborative will be evaluated by D-ENTERPRISE staff at the University of California San Diego to quantify the impacts of the proposed initiative on faculty and students engaged in the program to ensure the project goals are being met throughout the proposal period. This proposal submission represents the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez (UPRM) component of the IBOS Collaborative, which also aims to provide direct mentoring and support for two new faculty members to establish their research labs, mentor students, and coordinate local programming at UPRM. Similarly, this proposal effort will also further build local research and student mentoring capacity in Puerto Rico through hiring of a new faculty member at UPRM in applied ocean technology or other Office of Naval Research and providing them with direct mentoring and faculty support to establish their research program. The UPRM component of the D-ENTERPRISE IBOS Collaborative will therefore reach across career stages including impacts at the high school, undergraduate, graduate, and early career faculty levels through direct financial support, mentoring, and training during the proposed 5-year funding period with capacity building at the faculty level to expand UPRM#s capacity to mentor students and work on Office of Naval Research projects beyond the initial funding period. Collectively, the short-term and long term impacts of the proposed work will directly advance our capacity to include all of our country#s best talent to solve leading problems in the ocean sciences.
