NT24 (Nanotech 2024)

Abstract

Approved for Public ReleaseThis proposal is for ONR support of the NT24 (Nanotech 2024) which will be held from June 23rd to 28th on the MIT campus (in person only), Cambridge, MA. We are expecting 400 attendees, academic, industrial and students, from worldwideorigins. NT24 is the 24th conference of the NT series, one of the most influential scientific conferences in the field of nanoscience and technology. This conference is widely known to be one of the most influential scientific conferences in the field of nanoscience and technology. The meeting will address a broad range of topics of interest to the nanotube and low-dimensional materials communities. Specifically: Synthesis, processing and functionalization, properties and characterization, theory and simulation, and applications. The conference has a unique format, designed to foster interaction and networking. There are tutorials on the first day and then daily: plenary morning sessions, followed by parallel symposia sessions in the afternoon, and poster sessions in the early evening. This year the conference will also honor the legacy of the late Professor Millie Dresselhaus, MIT Physicist and Nanotechnology Pioneer. Professor Dresselhaus was the founder of the NT conference series in the year 2000. ONR funds will not be used for food or beverages, or social events of any kind. Funds will be used to enhance the diversity of speakers brought to the MIT campus to enrich the scientific exchange and ensure a global perspective on the state of nanotechnology and nanoscience. The Boston/Cambridgearea is situated among a large number of Colleges and Universities with significant STEM student enrollments. NT24 is an opportunity for students to attend an international conference this summer without the expense or carbon footprint of overseas travel. Students and faculty presenters from Yale, UMass Amherst, Brown, Dartmouth, UConn, Harvard, Mount Holyoke, WPI, as well as local community colleges (Middlesex and Bunkerhill) are within daily commuting and rail travel radii. ONR funds will significantly enhance the ability to serve these local attendees in addition to our international registrants, without the need for local housing. The conference has traditionally been student-focused with expanded opportunities for student poster presentations over three separate sessions during the conference. The tutorial session on Sunday, June 23rd will be structured such that student questions will be prioritizedand encouraged, and student participation will be facilitated. The NT event has been a source of important networking and scientific exchange for the field, with a historical connection to Professor Millie Dresselhaus at MIT, originator of the conference. The conference will continue Millie#s passionate devotion to student training and mentorship in this way. The tutorial session on Sundaywill include portions of the program that will highlight and honor Millie#s legacy at MIT and within the field. The conference will produce a publication outlining the current state, challenges and future directions of the nanoscience and nanotechnology fields, particularly with respect to its intersection with sustainability, in the form of assembled extended abstracts from the participants.
