Veterans to Naval Careers
Abstract
The U.S. is facing a shortage of skilled professionals in the Naval-industrial complex, at thesame time, transitioning Veterans seek viable career opportunities that utilize their skills andeducation. However, many Veterans lack awareness of potential career paths and struggle totranslate their military experience into civilian skills. The program proposed herein, Veterans to Naval Careers (VNC), is the sixth generation ofthis Office of Naval Research (ONR) grant. This award is rebranded from the Veterans to EnergyCareers (VTEC) program to incorporate non-energy related research and careers. The programwill provide student Veteran interns with hands-onexperience, career readiness training, andinternships focused on supporting all Naval research and technology development. The VTEC program is over 99% successful ensuring participants secure jobs beforegraduation. To date, 174 VTEC alumni have been hired into sustainable careers, with 30 of thosealumni (16%) working for the federal government. The VNC program will utilize this proven modelthat integrates military experience with academic experiences, preparing student Veterans forsuccessful civilian careers. By collaborating with higher education, industry, and government, theprogram provides networking opportunities, mentorship, and real-world laboratory experience. This demonstrates the value and impact of the VNC program in government and industry.VNC will contribute to the successful integration of Veterans into the Naval-industrialcomplex by leveraging existing resources, collaborating with partners, and by delivering an agileprogram. The commitment of California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) and its extensivenetwork of partnerships ensures the program s sustainability and the achievement of itsobjectives. The proposed budget and strategic timeline demonstrate CSUSM#s dedication to thelong-term success of the VNC program.
