2024 UHMS Annual Scientific Meeting
Abstract
The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit international scientific organization. The UHMS was founded in 1967 by a group of US Navy Medical Officers and academics to foster data exchange on the physiology and medicine of commercial and military diving. Since then, UHMS has grown to over 2,000 members from 60 countries. The UHMS established the most significant diving and hyperbaric research repository collected in one place. Clinical information, an extensive bibliographic database of thousands of scientific papers, books, and technical reports representing the results of more than 100 years of research by military and university laboratories worldwide, is contained in the UHMS Schilling Library. These holdings are now part of the Duke University Library in Durham, North Carolina. The results of ongoing research and clinical aspects of undersea and hyperbaric medicine are reported annually at the UHMS Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) and in the Society#s peer-reviewed and PubMed-searchable journal, Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, published quarterly. As required by its bylaws, UHMS has continued to organize and host the Society#s Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM). The purpose of the ASM is to provide a forum for those interested in undersea and hyperbaric medicine to share the latest information, science, and research data. The UHMS ASM hosts over 400 U.S. and international physicians, providers, scientists, nurses, technicians, respiratory therapists, and other stakeholders. In addition, the ASM is live streamed to individuals globally and is also captured for future enduring material. Undersea and hyperbaric medicine experts coordinate the UHMS ASM. This year#s meeting will be held June 13-15 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Cost Proposal The 2024 estimated expenses for the UHMS ASM are $226,900, with the primary source of revenue being registration fees. The UHMS requests $22,000 from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to subsidize the cost of holding the UHMS ASM. The funds will support STEM education and help subsidize the costs to cover registration for two (2) Fellow speakers, three (3) keynote speakers, and associated costs, as well as related conference room and equipment costs to UHMS. Funds will be provided to the speakers upon submission of appropriate receipts. Meeting space will be made available for ONR to support program purposes and interactions with program Investigators. ONR funds will not be used for reimbursement of food or drink.
