Characterizing acoustic propagation in complex underwater environments using measurements and models

Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACTApproved for Public ReleaseThe proposed work seeks to improve the understanding of acoustic propagation around complex bathymetry and in the fluctuating ocean as well as to the acoustics of sediments, seagrass, and sea/glacier ice. This proposal will support data analysis associated with field experiments including measurements of 3D propagation around seamounts, characterization of the acoustic response to northern ocean rapid surface evolution in the ice-free high latitudes, assessment of sediment heterogeneity on continental shelves and in the deep sea, and investigation of acoustic propagation and ambient sound under sea ice and in glacierized fjords. This proposal will support the PI as well as students and postdocs contributing the proposed work.
