Developing New Generation Consolidated Satellite Tags for Cetaceans

Abstract

This project intends to develop a new generation of consolidated, miniaturized satellite transmitters to remotely track large and medium-size cetaceans at sea. New tags are expected to more versatile, more benign, and to be applied to a wider range of species relative to current tag designs. Development will be carried out following best practices agreed by the scientific community and will include thorough laboratory experiments before tags are deployed in free ranging animals. Field deployments will take place with a whale population that has been subject to a long-term tagging study, favoring comparisons of the performance of new and existing satellite designs. Final designs are expected to be made commercially available to the population. This new generation of tags will allowfor better monitoring of cetacean populations and how to respond to human-related threats. Also, they will better assist the Navy in complying with environmental regulations in the US and abroad.
