Social Network Websites, Kremlin Propaganda and Internet Usage Patterns among Russians
Abstract
Russian President Vladimir Putin refers to the Russian-speaking population across the globe as #the Russian world# (Russkii mir), aterm originating in the Eurasianist school of philosophy associated with extreme Russian nationalists. Putin depicts the Russian world as engaging in a civilizational struggle against the West. Our project uses extensive published, digital, and social media used by Russians to explore the discourses, methods, and efficacy of Kremlin propaganda for Russian-speaking populations not only inside Russia but among Russian speakers outside Russia, giving special attention to émigrés who left Russia after the start of the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The research team consists of Russian studies scholars with significant expertise in various fields, including mathematics, history, politics, and culture. We will gather and analyze social and digital media data to explore how Russian speakers interact with social network services and gauge the resonance ofKremlin disinformation, particularly anti-U.S. and anti-Western narratives. Our project supports the 2022 National Defense Strategy by examining the nature of attacks against the United States and its allies in the information space and the challenges posed by Russia in Europe.
