Seventh International Conference on the Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life
Abstract
We request support for the seventh International Conference on "The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life" in Prague, Czech Republic, June 29-July 4, 2025 (www.an2025.org). This meeting, as in past meetings in this series, provides an opportunity for the Navy to learnabout current research in this broad topic and to interact with the scientists, regulators, and others who share interests in the topic. Because the meeting presents the latest science, the Navy will become aware of work being conducted all around the world. In addition, since the meeting attracts people from many countries in addition to the USA, there is a strong opportunity for discussion, learning, and sharing of ideas. There is no other meeting venue in the world that provides this kind of opportunity. The major goal of AN2025 will be to define the current state of knowledge on the impact of underwater noise and, in particular, explore the progress made in this field in the three years since the previous conference. Theextension of renewable energy and petroleum projects to offshore waters, the prospect of industrial development of previously pristine waters (e.g., polar regions), and recent proposals toopen new areas for petroleum lease (e.g., US Atlantic coast) has resulted in greater interest in the effects of underwater noise onaquatic life on the part of regulators, industry, and scientists. The need for rigorous examination of the environmental impact of underwater noise has driven new research into sound sources, their effects, and methods of mitigating their impact. AN2025 will place strong emphasis on recent research results, the sharing of ideas, discussion of experimental approaches, and analysis of regulatory issues. Support is requested primarily to fund students and postdocs, as well as representatives from "third world" countries, to enable them to attend the meeting. A smaller portion of the support is for meeting expenses. A focus of this meeting, as in the past, is to ensure diversity in terms of gender, age, and experience, and to include, wherever possible, underrepresented minorities andto provide them with mentoring opportunities while at the meeting.
