Enhancing Equitability and Access to Science by Creating Conference Capacity for the 25th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals.

Abstract

This proposal is for technical support for the Society for Marine Mammalogy Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals # being held in Perth, Australia in November 2024. This BAA has generously supported this meeting in the past, and continued support is more important now than ever as the Society continues to strive to fulfill an obligation to engage and share science with marginalized members of our scientific community while navigating increased costs to holding this event due to global inflation. This proposal will support increased scientific access in two ways: 1) supporting travel for underrepresented members of our scientific community, 2) increasing accessibility for attendees with children or factors that generally limit engagement, and 3) providing on-demand access to recordings of daily plenaries and presentations shortly after the conference.Estimated minimum cost for recorded keynote presentations and content captured sessions delivered shortly post-conference is $100K. The total projected budget for travel support, childcare space, and resources for hearing-impaired delegates is $140K. This proposal is requesting $40,000 to support components of both.
