2024 Solid State Studies in Ceramics Gordon Research Conference
Abstract
Summary Approved for Public ReleaseFunds are requested to support the Solid State Studies in Ceramics Gordon Research Conference subtitled Merging Atomistic and Continuum Analysis of Defects and Interfaces Across Varying Length Scales, in agreement with the Nano Engineered Materials Program (Code 33), whose specific interest is on #developing an understanding the limits imposed by the physical and chemical characteristics of a material in creating [#] ensembles with desired properties. The conference will be held August 4- 9, 2024, and is designed to advance the field of ceramics by bringing together experts across various disciplines to discuss the latest discoveries and advancements and define where the field will go. Material defects are central to much of the research in ceramics and is a theme woven into all parts of this conference. The proposed funding will be used to support the travel and registration of key speakers, and to promote participation of postdoctoral researchers, young researchers graduate students, all an integral group of the conference participants. The overall goal is to advance the development of new approaches to create materials with exceptional and unprecedented behaviors by developing a fundamental understanding of the atomistic and nanometer scale and its interactionswith surfaces and interfaces. These behaviors are dictated by multi physical driving forces (i.e., are multi physical), which are coupled, both physically and microstructurally. A significant amount of current research in ceramics is integrally connected to theirprocessing and manufacturing, displaying multi physical behavior with applications. These specifically include the emergence of data driven atomistic and mesocontinuum computational modeling approaches, novel in situ experiments, and measurements under extreme conditions. Integration of modeling and experiments across different length scales is a critical part of the future of ceramics and will be incorporated in several sessions.
