Multi-Function Sonar Algorithm Development - Exploration of Sonar Resolution Space

Abstract

This research project will seek to expand the performance of shallow water echo sounder sonar systems that traditionally are used as downward-looking bottom mapping tools to include forward- and backward-looking modes that can operate simultaneously with downward-looking mapping mode. The project will explore the potential for using this class of sonar in a multi-purpose mode to include forward- and backward-obstacle avoidance in addition to traditional bottom mapping and will conduct research to develop algorithms to extend the utility of bottom mapping sonar, optimizing resolution for expanded fields of view in multiple directions.
