Algorithm Development for Seabed Mapping and Characterization using Artificial Intelligence Deep Machine Learning

Abstract

This research project will advance algorithm development and training of artificial intelligence (AI) systems through machine learning and deep learning models for the development of high-resolution ocean seabed mapping and bottom characterization. A data processing and storage center will serve as a hub for training artificial intelligence (AI) systems and deep machine learning models. Leveraging a high-performance computing infrastructure, researchers will develop advanced algorithms capable of processing vast amounts of acoustic, micro-bathymetric, and 3D photogrammetry data. Data from multiple sensor types will be used to develop and train AI models that will enhance the accuracy and efficiency of seabed mapping by identifying patterns and features that are difficult to detect with traditional methods. A repository of high resolution, multi-modal data will be built up over time, allowing for continuous improvement in seabed characterization techniques. Artificial Intelligence(AI) and deep learning have the potential to revolutionize ocean seabed mapping and characterization by enabling more accurate, efficient, and comprehensive analysis of the ocean bottom domain. This project will utilize AI and deep learning to improve Navy capability in the following areas of research:#Automated feature detection and classification#Data fusion#Predictive modeling and change detection
