Researching Interior Ocean Trajectories (RIOT): Lagrangian Fluid Dynamics in the Interior

Abstract

This proposal is for continuing oceanic circulation research using the Regional Oceanic ModelingSystem (ROMS) by the team at UCLA. The focus is on interior currents, especiallythe submesoscale currents in the pycnocline and/or related to topographic influences. Thesewill be analyzed in the context of the more familiar interior mesoscale eddies, inertia-gravitywaves, and microscale turbulence.Because the experimental approach planned for ONR#s DirectedResearch Initiative #Researching Interior Ocean Trajectories# is based on Lagrangianmeasurements, we will seed our realistic, high-resolution simulations with many trackedparcels and develop new analysesand dynamical interpretations for such data sets.
