Development Activities for CLAVR-x Atmospheric Cloud Satellite Remote Sensing

Abstract

The CLAVR-x (Clouds from AVHRR Extended) processing system retrieves atmospheric cloud properties from satellite imagery and is thedevelopment platform for the NOAA Enterprise operational cloud algorithms. CLAVR-x is distinctive in that it supports dozens of geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites, each with unique radiometric and spatial characteristics. CLAVR-x output is also used as input for ML (Machine Learning) models that produce value-added or secondary products. This proposal supports development activities for the CLAVR-x processing system in support of the ONR (Office of Naval Research). Two ONR-funded projects that run CLAVR-x are theNRL (U.S. Naval Research Laboratory) operation of GeoIPS (Geolocated Information Processing System) and OVERCAST (Optical Variability Evaluation of Regional Cloud Asymmetries in Space and Time). The efforts described here will add additional functionality to CLAVR-x as well as improve stability and operability in support of these projects.Approved for public release
