Measuring Chinese Influence Along the Belt and Road

Abstract

Approved for Public Release.Current efforts at monitoring and measuring Chinese influence campaigns have focused on what might be called the "macro" and "micro" levels; that is, on the one hand they track Chinese-sponsored influence campaign on social media platforms, and on the other they examine the expressed sentiments of individuals (e.g. politicians) towards China. What is absent is "meso" level analysis that examines the interaction between Chinese influence campaigns and expressed sentiment of prominent individuals.
