Remote sensing of sea ice and icebergs- building internationally-integrated workflows
Abstract
The Arctic region is of significant strategic concern, presenting complex challenges due to its harsh climate, limited infrastructure, and scarce operational experience. To tackle these challenges, the International Cooperative Engagement Program for Polar Research (ICE-PPR) was established in 2019 to foster collaboration among defense departments operating in the Arctic, Antarctic, and other Polar Regions. The ICE-PPR coalition comprises seven nations: Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, New Zealand, and the United States. The inaugural "International Workshop on Sea Ice and Icebergs," held in April 2023 at theUnited States Naval Academy (USNA), emphasized the importance of collective knowledge-sharing and cooperation in tackling Polar operational challenges. This workshop explored gaps in sea ice and iceberg operations, with a significant focus on remote sensing technologies. The outcomes and insights gained from this event laid the foundation for further exploration of remote sensing applications in the Polar Regions. This proposal aims to synthesize priorities and organize future remote sensing efforts within this framework.
