Airborne and Ground-based Compact Raman Lidar and Doppler Lidar Measurements and Analysis Supporting MAGPIE
Abstract
The Moisture & Aerosol Gradient/Physics of inversion evolution (MAGPIE) is an Office of Naval Research (ONR) flagged field mission to investigate the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL) processes. To advance our understanding of MABL processes, resolving spatial and temporal PBL thermodynamics and cloud/aerosol structure variations is critical. To provide necessary measurements supporting MAGPIE objectives, Ground-based and airborne measurements are necessary. Our Compact Raman lidar (CRL) can provide simultaneous water vapor, temperature, and aerosol profiles, and newly developed all-fiber Airborne Doppler Lidar (ADL) can provide radial wind measurements. CRL and ADL are part of the overall MAGPIE design to provide necessary data. During the 2023 IOP, CRL and one ADL was deployed on the ground from a scanning platform to observe tropical low MABL, and zenith and nadir pointing ADL were deployed on the CIRPAS Twin Otter (TO) to provide spatial distributions of aerosol, clouds and vertical velocity. In 2024, we are planning to deployCRL and one ADL on the TO for characterizing spatial MABL water vapor, temperature, and aerosol variations, especially around clouds. The followings are our four specific objectives:1 Deploy CRL/ADL to support MAGPIE field data collection during the 2023/2024 IOPs2. Process, evaluate, and archive ADL/CRL data3. Understand key processes driving tropical low MABL property variations focusing oncharacterizing and understanding low MABL water vapor variabilities, exploring how sea-spray aerosols impact near surface water vapor and temperature structures, quantifying MABL updraft and downdraft scale and magnitudes and how they link with cumulus cloud development. 4. Support the MAGPIE team using ADL/CRL measurements for LES model evaluations and other studies.
