Improving Meteorological Geolocated Processing Resources for Operations and Open Science (IMGPROS)
Abstract
This proposal outlines a general scope of research to be conducted at the basic to applied research level (i.e., spanning 6.1 to 6.4 equivalent). The research aligns the satellite environmental remote sensing and data processing expertise and resources of the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University (CSU) with the practical needs and attendant research priorities of the Office of Naval Research (ONR). This effort leverages existing research programs funded at CIRA by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Monterey, CA. Additionally, this work benefits from 15+ yearsof collaboration between CIRA performers and NRL scientists. These collaborations include the initial creation of GeoIPS in 2010 and its ongoing development.Working in close collaboration with the NRL, CIRA#s research and development will focus on improving the Geolocated Information Processing System (GeoIPS) with two main objectives inmind:#Provide innovations to GeoIPS that facilitate its shore- and ship-based use by the US Navy.#Provide functionalities that facilitate expanded use of GeoIPS by the open-source community for scientific basic to applied research. The developments proposed herein are dual purposed to achieve usability, efficiency, maintainability, and functionality on both fronts. This research effort is broken into a number of high-level R&D focus areas to be addressed over a 5-year period. These R&D focus areas are intended to add new features to GeoIPS, address identified functional challenges, and capitalize on concurrent research developments at CIRA and with its partners in support of Navy research priorities. Each of the items listed below is detailed in the accompanying technical proposal.
