DURIP Microbolometer DURIP
Abstract
Microbolometers enable broadband detection of radiation by absorbing the signal radiation and measuring the resulting thermal power. Microbolometers have emerged as the preferred technology for uncooled imaging in the long-wave infrared (LWIR) band. This proposalincludes the acquisition of equipment required for the development of a test platform for the characterization of microbolometers, directly enhancing a funded grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) (GRANT 14040798). This grant is aimed at developing high-resolution and high-bandwidth infrared detectors based on phonon-assisted bolometry. Developing such a high-resolution detector necessitates a test platform that minimizes thermal perturbations from the surrounding environment to the detector. Currently, the PI#s laboratory utilizes a custom-fabricated temperature-stabilized vacuum chamber for characterizing thermal sensors. However, this chamber lacks the necessary equipment and sufficient thermal stability for characterizing sensitive infrared detectors. This proposal involves the acquisition of essential optical components, including MWIR and LWIR lasers, beam-directing optics, an acousto-optic modulator, a cooled LWIR detector, an upgraded vacuum system, and a vibration isolation table necessary for characterizing the detectivity of microbolometers. Additionally, this proposal includes acquiring a high-frequency lock-in amplifier for characterizing phonon-assisted bolometers. The addition of this experimental capability would provide ONR with a testbed for evaluating a broad range of thermal detectors. Additionally, it will significantly enhance the research capability at Rutgers University in other research areas ofinterest to the DoD, such as thermophotonics and thermal characterization and management of microelectronics.
