Second Research Experience Summer School for Gifted Ukrainian STEM High School Students

Abstract

The second S4U Summer School will be organized jointly by the University of Central Florida and the Advanced Science Research Center of CUNY. S4U#2 Summer School is a summer enrichment program, established specifically to support STEM gifted high school student from Ukraine to provide them with research opportunities at the City College of New York, and opportunities to interact with their peers from specialized science high schools of New York City, and undergraduate students of CUNY, SUNY, and other Universities of New York City area. It reiterated and builds on success of the first summer school run by PI Khanikaev and co-PI Alu at CUNY in summer 2023.The format of the three-week-long summer school provides morning educational session, with lectures given by faculty volunteers of CUNY, followed by afternoon and evening research training and research sessions. Available late afternoon time is included for ad hoc meetings, informal discussions, and/or recreation with active engagement of local high school students and undergraduate student participants from New York City area. This format is designed to enhance rapport among participants and promote dialogue between the youngest researchers of Ukraine and the United States of America, as well as to provide students with clear understanding of career opportunities in STEM. We believe that the school will be instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional generic summer school programs for high school students in the USA, and the event will communicate the strongest support to STEM students in Ukraine, enhancing their interest in science and providing them with unique research opportunities not available in their home country.
