Visualization Enhancements for Augmented Reality (VEAR)

Abstract

Abstract (Publicly Releasable):While many aspects of Augmented Reality (AR) technology have advanced remarkably in recent years, practical robust use of AR outdoors continues to present immense challenges in terms of significantly increased ranges of use parameters, e.g., the range of display luminance and color, display field of view, and the scene complexity and extents. We propose to undertake a two-year program of research aimed at understanding how the increased ranges of use parameters can affect users, and to explore methods for mitigating the limitations of the technology. Specifically we propose basic research in two primary areas: human factors models for outdoor AR, and systems & methods for outdoor AR. As part of that effort we anticipate a third area of work where we leverage external synergies and develop collaborations with others, including others working in the Target Handoff System-Next (THS-Next) Key Program.
