Regional, Seasonal and Large Dynamics Scale Based Covariance and Humidity Control Variable Transform Improvements for NAVDAS-AR

Abstract

The work proposed is to address two components of the Navy’s 4-dimensional variational (4D VAR) data assimilation system, Naval Research Laboratory’s (NRL) NRL Atmospheric Variational Data Assimilation System-Accelerated Representer (NAVDAS-AR) which will have a positive impact on the performance of this vital operational data assimilation system. The first component is to implement a new representation for the moisture control variable that would be based upon the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) moisture representation that is referred to as the Holm Transform (Holm et al, 2002). The second component focuses on the background error covariance matrix. This matrix is important in constraining the influence of the background state on the analysis, given the observations that are available throughout the assimilation window. This matrix is also important in the pre-conditioner of many of the major operational Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) centers.
