Interactions Between Tropical Cyclon and Large-Scale Monsoon Gyre

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to understand fundamental dynamics of interactions between tropical cyclone (TC) and large-scale low-frequency monsoon gyre (MG), and to examine the impact of such binary interactions on TC sudden track change. The proposed project consists of the following two research thrusts. Firstly, we will conduct a thorough observational analysis to identify all sudden TC track change cases that occurred in the western North Pacific (WNP) during the past decade (2000-2011). Secondly, we will examine the barotropic and baroclinic dynamics related to the binary MG – TC interaction.
