NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY RESIDENT ASSOCIATESHIP PROGRAM

Abstract

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies) proposes to provide overall administrative services for the successful conduct of an NRC Research Associateship Program (RAP) for the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Under this agreement, the National Academies will make postdoctoral NRC Research Associateship awards on behalf of the NRL to carefully selected doctoral-level scientists and engineers in national competitions. NRC Research Associateship awards will provide opportunities that enable NRC Research Associates to increase their proficiency in conducting research, advance the research programs of NRL, and make NRL laboratory facilities, which often include unique equipment, available to the scientific community. A system of Research Opportunities (RO) developed by the National Academies in support of federally funded postdoctoral research programs, will be publicly accessible for prospective applicants to explore opportunities with a shared mission focus that is searchable by keyword, Research Adviser name, and NRL laboratory location. After identification of RO of interest, prospective applicants are instructed to contact the NRL Research Adviser in advance of applying to ensures compatibility of the applicant and the proposed research with the mission of the NRL. The National Academies will champion the NRL ROs with dynamic and multifaceted promotional strategies to broadly reach relevant and targeted audiences of highly qualified PhD scientists and engineers with an emphasis on underrepresented groups in STEM. Beyond targeted digital marketing, campus visits, social media engagement, and posts on professional society and employment websites, the National Academies routinely engages with the scientific community in its role as an advisor to the nation and through in-person engagement at a wide selection of conferences and meetings, allowing for direct connections with potential applicants.
