Numerical Analysis of Wave Impact Loads on Surface Naval Craft

Abstract

Research into wave impact loads over the past several decades has led to a deeper understanding of this phenomena and improvements in the load prediction capabilities. Nonetheless, the current prediction methods have limitations that can negatively impact modem naval platform designs including their safety and tactical effectiveness. The main focus of the proposed work is to use high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFO) tools to study wave impact loads on surface vessels and to evaluate statistical methods of predicting extreme loads during the vesse1 s lifespan. The proposed work will also introduce university students to the research area of wave impact and naval hydrodynamics.
