Determination of the Effects of Thermal and Mechanical Stress on PBX Binder Materials

Abstract

The response of PBX materials to aging and mechanical stress ultimately depends on changes to the molecular structure of the material. Molecular spectroscopy, including FTIR, Raman and vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy will be utilized to investigate the response of neat PBX binders, formulated binders, and the binder/HE interface as samples are subjected to simulated aging and mechanical deformation. This knowledge will improve our ability to model these materials.
