Scoping Future Nuclear Proliferation Risks: Leveraging Emerging Trends in Socio-Cultural Modeling and Analysis

Abstract

Our proposed project aims to strengthen and refine socio-cultural analytic frameworks designed to anticipate WMD aspirants and isolate points of leverage within those national communities in order to thwart, disrupt, or productively shift weapons aspirations. We propose to employ a novel socio-cultural analytic approach to assess points of leverage within a small selection of near and medium term potential nuclear aspirants including at least one allied with and one adversarial to the US. This process is likely to demonstrate the complexity of simultaneously applied deterrence strategies against significantly different actors. Our approach aims to engage that complexity by identifying decision vectors and diverse actor sets within individual polities that may be open to influence by the US. The research process we recommend seeks to highlight areas where analytical models may continue to be refined and to strengthen scholarly inquiry of next generation WMD/WME concerns and solutions
