Joint Chinese-U.S. Activities on Biological Safety and Security

Abstract

The Chinese Biological Scientists Group (CBSG) was established as the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee on International Security and Arms Control’s (CISAC) counterpart for biological issues in 2007. With support from the Project on Advanced Systems and Concepts for Countering WMD (PASCC) program for the project Initiating Joint Chinese-U.S. Activities on Biological Safety and Global Health Security, CISAC and CBSG leadership began a program of joint work and met formally on September 28-30, 2015 in Beijing to discuss a range of biological safety and security issues. The NAS CISAC proposes to conduct a follow-on project, Joint Chinese-U.S. Activities on Biological Safety and Security, will allow CISAC to continue to meet with Chinese counterparts in China, including in Wuhan and/or Kunming where Biological Safety Level (BSL) 4 laboratories are under construction, and in the United States for the purposes of building awareness of biosafety and biosecurity issues within the Chinese bioscience community, cultivating a set of Chinese leaders and champions in the biosecurity area, equipping Chinese scientists and institutions to better implement biosafety and biosecurity, and ultimately improving the relationship between the U.S. and China on a range of biological security and biological safety issues.
