TROOPS TO TEACHERS

Abstract

(1) Overview: The Michigan Troops to Teachers (TTT) program provides advisory services that assist eligible military personnel to transition to a new careers as classroom teachers in K-12 public schools. Counseling assistance related to teacher certification requirements and limited job placement assistance is provided. Financial support is also offered to certain eligible participants. (2) Goals and Objectives: • To recruit, into the State of Michigan, well prepared professionals, thus helping to reverse the flow of those choosing to leave the state. • To add a pool of mature (average age 42) professionals who have exceptional leadership experience and skills. • To increase K-12 work force diversity, since 43% of the participants are people of color (13% national average) and 85% are males (25% national average). • To attract a work force with significant global and international experience living and working in cultures with different languages, monetary systems, customs and life styles. • To focus upon recruiting for the high needs, low income communities. Troops to Teachers participants are adept at leading at-risk youth. • To provide financial assistance to veterans who qualify. A $5,000 stipend and $10,000 bonus are available. • To partner with public and private colleges and universities to explore models that award college credit for career and military training and service. With the support of our stakeholders including Michigan Department of Education and Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, the Michigan TTT Program will redouble efforts to implement future opportunities. • To retain 85% of those teachers after 5 years of teaching, while the national average is 50%. This results in savings to school districts since the cost to recruit, train and professionally develop teachers is significant. (3) Team structure and composition of the proposed project: DOD, DANTES, Michigan Department of Education, State Manager (Edwardeen Jones) (4) Description of proposed site and demographics of the population targeted: • 82% of teachers entering through the TTT program are male in an ever increasingly female workforce, 37% of participants are minorities. • 40% of TTT participants are filling high needs subject areas (mathematics and science) 62% of TTT participants hold a master’s degree in an area other than education and 27% hold a master’s degree in education • TTT Participants are also more likely to move from where they are to where the demand for teachers is greatest (including rural areas within the state)
