Troops to Teachers Oklahoma and Colorado Grant

Abstract

The state of Oklahoma has approximately 336,000 veterans while the state of education in Oklahoma is enduring a critical teacher shortage. Connecting eligible veterans with teaching positions in high needs areas is the focus of this application. The award funds will buoy the innovative approach of matching geographic veteran locale with school district requests for emergency certificates in science, mathematics and foreign language. The state of Colorado has approximately 409,000 veterans and serves over 900,000 students across urban and rural contexts. The state, like all others in the country, is experiencing an increasing teacher shortage in critical content areas such as math, science, and special education, as well as in our rural and ever growing suburban areas. While Colorado has a teacher shortage, they have a population of over 400,000 highly talented, skilled, socially conscious military veteran members ready to fill the void and support our children. The award funds from Troops to Teachers will support matching veterans with high needs education areas including geographically isolated rural school areas, high needs socioeconomic areas, and hard to fill subject areas such as math, science, special education, foreign language and STEM subjects. Oklahoma and Colorado will conduct the following services: Recruitment – Recruiting military members for the teaching profession. Career orientation and selection – Provide potential participants with the opportunity to fully explore options relative to their personal values, interests and skill. Enrollment – Ensure participants received all the benefits to which they are entitled. Assist veterans in selecting a grade level or teaching subject, type of school Preparation for employment - Assist veterans in selecting a grade level or teaching subject, type of school based on specific region where the candidate wishes to work and reside. Professional learning – Once teaching credential is issued, access to professional development will be ongoing. Follow-up – Participants will be formally tracked over a five year period.
