Advanced Insulation System Design for Fast Light-weight Altitude-ready Solid-state Circuit Breaker for Hybrid Electric Propulsion (FLASH)

Abstract

Advanced insulation system design is proposed for the Fast Light-weight Altitude-ready Solid-state Circuit Breaker for Hybrid Electric Propulsion (FLASH). Partial discharge at high altitude has been identified as a major threat to the performance and safe operation of the FLASH. This program aims to develop a defect tolerant insulation system for altitude-ready solid-state circuit breaker, enabled by robust and comprehensive characterization tests as well as new materials and insulation system design innovation. The success of this project could significantly advance the hybrid electric propulsion technology for emerging electric aviation with extremely high fuel efficient and low emission. Furthermore, the advanced insulation system developed could branch out into marine electrical system and renewable energies with broad economic and environ-mental impacts.
