Variability in Human Cognitive Task Performance Times: Empirical Data and Models
Abstract
System design is a critical issue in the Navy because of the expense and complexity of developing modern platforms. Too often, poorly-designed systems are put into production due to design processes that are unable to understand how small changes may have large impacts on usability. These systems then require huge increases in training, development of work-arounds, and/or re-design. Getting the initial design right is a difficult but necessary task in a time of shrinking budgets. This work in modeling human performance in basic cognitive tasks will provide the building blocks for systems that will aid in future system design.
