CSP - ASEAN Smart Grid Congress 1

Abstract

Electric power becomes a main source of energy for every country around the world. The world’s electric power consumption is comparable to fossil fuel energy consumption. However, fossil fuel energy has been used mainly in transportation. In contrary, electric power has been utilized into various applications. The economical scale of electricity usage is as high as 5% of world GDP or 4.7 trillion USD. It is predicted that energy crisis would take place in the near future due to the world’s demand on limited energy source. The worlds’ demand on electric power is projected to increase from 50,000 TW to 100,000 TW in 2030 or within the next 15 years. Energy vulnerability is, therefore, a great concern for every country as it will have serious impact on overall security especially ones with high dependency on energy imports. In particular, electrical power production requires large amount of natural resources such fossil fuels. The exploration and transportation costs of fossil fuels including oil, natural gas and coal are incredibly high. Also, relocating those resources from their original sites to the power plants is an inefficient option due to their enormous volume. To enhance energy security, purchases and sales of power through smart grid transmission should be implemented instead of conventional source power generating. In order to do this, existing renewable energy power plants should boost their production outputs to be adequately provided in the grid. Additionally, the administration and management of complicated transaction between renewable sources and worldwide connected grid requires human resources with expertise in the field together with supports from both government and private sectors. Accordingly, experts in renewable energy, energy efficient and smart grid system from worldwide organizations have strongly advised that the conference regarding Smart Grid should be initiated. University of Phayao is therefore planning on organizing the first meeting, ASEAN Smart Grid Congress 1. This congress will stimulate discussions, exchange of information and share experiences. ASEAN Smart Grid Congress 1 is considered as an important platform for in moving forward the Smart Grid technologies into the ASEAN region. The main objectives of the conference are as follows. • Bring together experts, researchers, policy makers and potential users to exchange knowledge and ideas on economics, technology, policy and other aspects of Smart Grid, featuring field visits and presentations. • Initiate and maintain efficient cooperative networks among ASEAN countries • Develop an overall roadmap and implementation plan in moving forward the Smart Grid in ASEAN region
