CSP - INTERNATIONAL BIOFABRICATION CONFERENCE 2015
Abstract
DESCRIPTION/TechnicalThe annual International Biofabrication conference is held in a different continent each year, to gather experts from different disciplines interested in engineering principles applied to biological and medical sciences. The biofabrication community aims at creating three-dimensional biological constructs that have the potential to be used in regenerative medicine as well as in basic sciences as in vitro 3D models that can help understanding pathological mechanisms or potential new treatments of targeted diseases. In doing so, the ultimate goal is to reduce the use of animal models and create a new technological platform that can resemble more accurately the physiological and anatomical characteristics of native tissues and organs. RELEVANCEThe topic of the meeting is of interest for the ONR global strategy in Autonomy and Unmanned Systems, covering the areas of biorobotics, and in Information Dominance - Cyber and of Warfighter Performance, covering the areas of biologically inspired systems, biosensors, and bioprocesses. Furthermore, the meeting is of interest also to the ONR programmes in Warfighter Protection and Applications covering the areas of Biomedical Technology, Biomaterials and bio-mimetic technology, and possibly in the longer term Casualty Care and Management. ONR Code 34 will be informed of the grant, specifically Dr. Linda Chrisey (synbio) and Dr. Laura Kienker (nanobio materials). ONRG AD has shared proposal with DARPA BTO PM Weber who is interested in potentially attending the workshop as it applies to his programs in prosthetic limb integration/interfaces. The grant is very small (VSP size) so no co-funding was requested by AD at this time. OUTCOMEReporting about content of meeting; participation by ONR/ONRG/DARPA at meeting with no registration costs.
