VSP - Measuring waves in ice - AUV/UAV observations of the autumnal MIZ on SeaState ALASKA

Abstract

To participate on the ONR-funded ‘SeaState’ Arctic MIZ voyage in October 2015. In particular to work as part of the team led by Stephen Ackley and Ted Maksym responsible for ‘Wave-Ice and Air-Ice-Ocean Interaction During the Chukchi Sea Ice Edge Advance’. Dr Williams will work with the WHOI AUV team in an operational and scientific capacity based on his previous experience with the SeaBED AUV ‘Jaguar’ in Antarctica during the SIPEX-2 voyage of 2012. Dr Williams will also provide an additional UAS capability for acquiring aerial imagery of floe-size distribution. He is a certified UAV pilot and has operational experience deploying UAVs from icebreakers after a successful pilot program on NBP15-03 in Antarctica this April. In addition Dr Williams has a strong research background in polar oceanography and is expected to contribute scientific input to the broader objectives of this voyage. Dr Williams’ salary and equipment comes from the Australian Research Council, and this funding request is to support travel to/from the departure/return port of Nome, with accommodation and cargo.
