International Symposium on Piezocrystals and their Applications
Abstract
Technical: The piezoelectric single crystal exhibits excellent electromechanical properties, enabling sonar transducers with exceptional capabilities (>4X power level, 50-70% reduction in size, >4X sensitivity, 2X-3X bandwidth, etc.). It is of significant importance to monitor the development of piezocrystal compositions and applications worldwide. To date, ONR and ONRG have had good coverage on the technology status in Asia. On the other hand, there have been only scattered piezocrystal activities in Europe and therefore limited information on the technology status. To be held in UK, the International Symposium on Piezocrystals and their Applications offers an opportunity to identify current and future piezocrystal research in Europe. It will be an important forum to connect with materials scientists in Europe on the state of the art. Relevance: The piezoelectric single crystal is the enabling material of the next generation sonar transducer. Naval applications include countermeasure, acoustic modem, vector sensor, hydrophone, and projectors.
