RIO Acoustics 2015 Acoustics in Underwater Geoscience Symposium
Abstract
. Acoustics is the most effective way of exploring deep and shallow ocean as well as inland waters. Being non-invasive, safe and economical a wide range of acoustic tools are being routinely used in a variety of applications in ocean engineering and environmental management.Brazil has one of the world’s longest coastline and territorial waters of about 4.5 million square kilometers, which nearly corresponds to half of the country’s land area. During the last decade, as a result of steady increase in fisheries, oil and gas exploration and production and REMPLAC program development on marine mineral resources, this area has become a major focus of attention. Inland there are over 6500 kilometers of waterways and tens of dams for hydroelectricity.Building on the success of RIO Acoustics first edition, which took place in 2013, RIO Acoustics 2015 aims to establish itself as the main forum for discussion of methods and technologies related to acoustic remote sensing of underwater environments and ecosystems in Latin America. The city of Rio de Janeiro was chosen by hosting important governmental agencies, engineering, supply and service companies operating in ocean and inland waters. The symposium is a great opportunity for the professionals of these companies to be presented to the newest technologies. The state of Rio de Janeiro and the nearby states of São Paulo and Espirito Santo have several big universities with graduation courses on disciplines closely related to the symposium topics.
