SEANES 2015 Workshop on Ergonomics Checkpoints and Professional Certification

Abstract

Specific and proven ergonomics guidelines for system and work environment design is critical for the health and safety of any workforce. However, many currently-existing guidelines do not take into account the unique circumstances that industrially-developing countries in Southeast Asia possess (e.g., tropical conditions of extreme heat and humidity). This workshop will bring together human factors researchers and practitioners from across Southeast Asia to discuss a way forward for developing ergonomics checklists and guidelines and a way to move forward with their testing. b. Relevance: There are DoD and DoN standards for ergonomics and design, but there are a steady stream of novel situations encountered by warfighters (combinations of temperature, noise, vibration, ventilation, and more) that could benefit from a quick-reference checklist of how best to complete work in these environments. While physical ergonomics is not as glamorous as cognition or neuroscience, warfighting is often a very physical task, and physical demands must be taken into consideration. This workshop will help do that. c. Coordination: Code 34 and Code 30 HPTE will benefit from outputs of this workshop. d. Desired outcome. A draft of Ergonomics Checkpoints for Indoor and Outdoor Workplaces in IDCs. A draft of a Model for Certification of Human Factors Professionals and Ergonomists in Southeast Asia. Final report summarizing workshop discussions.
