First International Workshop on Renewable Energy for the Mekong Delta

Abstract

The Mekong Delta (MD), with a natural area of about 4 million hectares and over 18.4 million people, is the biggest agricultural production area in the entire country and is considered the rice basket of Viet Nam. Besides rice production, the Mekong Delta is also rich in fruit and seafood for export. During the past years, many industrial and processing zones have been established, contributing a big part into the development of the whole country. Economic growth and improved living standards have resulted in huge energy demand in Vietnam in general and in the Mekong Delta in particular. The primary energy demand is projected to grow annually in the region. Alternative energy sources, such as solar, wind, and other renewable energy, especially biomass are becoming more and more attractive. It is not only to develop economy of the region and to reduce the urban pollution but also to contribute to solve the global warming problem related to energy. The workshop will provide a great opportunity for participants to discuss the latest scientific and technical developments and to have a chance to build network with the scientists and engineers from different countries. The workshop will provide an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of advances in the science and technology of energy conversion and sustainable energy sources
