Comparative genomics of marine mammals

Abstract

Genomics is a new discipline that is gearing up to change how we study behavior, physiology, ecology, and a variety of other biological fields. While isolating and sequencing individual genes have proven useful in itself, genomics offers the chance to understand biological function and inheritance in its entirety. A single gene for example, may produce a protein that influences a physiological process in a species. That gene/protein though, will be regulated by dozens of other genes that will not necessarily be co-located. By approaching complex biological questions via the genetic code, the various pieces that play a role can be tracked.
