CSP - International Discussion Meeting: Resonance Energy Transfer in Life Sciences II
Abstract
After the great success of the first discussion meeting in 2011 on the occasion of Theodor Fšrster s 100th birthday we want to revisit the ever growing impact of FRET in the life sciences and are therefore organizing the International Discussion Meeting on Fšrster Resonance Energy Transfer in the Life Sciences II in 2016 from Sunday, April 3rd through Wednesday, April 6th (fret.hhu.de) at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Gšttingen, Germany. The scientific areas covered in the meeting will be i) Single-molecule FRET, ii) FRET Biophysics and Spectroscopy, and iii) FRET Imaging in the life sciences organized in 8 oral sessions and 2 poster sessions. To encourage and facilitate interaction and discussions the meeting will be limited to 160 participants. Half of the speakers will be selected from the submitted abstracts whereas the other half will be invited speakers. Additionally, all participants are encouraged to bring posters for discussion throughout the meeting. FRET is a very powerful technique utilized in biosensing, diagnostics, imaging, and all forms of bioresearch and its applications continue to grow almost exponentially. Indeed the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory has several current programs that significantly depend upon the use of FRET and focus on developing new applications for it. These are primarily focused on nanotechnology under the PresidentÕs National Nanotechnology Initiative which directs DoD to develop new and active nanomaterials and processes that will provide breakthrough technologies and systems to the future warfighter. Some of the programs underway currently focus on trying to understand how new types of nanomaterials such as semiconductor quantum dots and fluorescent gold nanoclusters can engage in FRET. Long term applications of these materials and processes include enhancing warfighter performance and health along with integration into systems and synthetic biology all of which are ONR priorities or focus areas. Encouraged by the success of the first meeting in 2011, at which Dr. Igor Medintz (NRL, Washington, DC) was one of the invited speaker, he decided to join the organizing committee of the 2nd conference. Moreover Prof. Stefan Hell (Noble Prize in Chemistry 2014) is another member of the organizing committee.
