CSP - 23RD WISE MEETING
Abstract
Abstract The ocean has now been accepted as the key element for both extended weather forecast, for seasonal forecasts and climate projections. For a long while atmosphere and ocean models have communicated via the sea surface interface. However, it is now fully recognized that wind waves affectto a large extent all the exchanges through the surface. In some cases, as heat and gas transfers, this may be up to one or two orders of magnitude. On top of that, wind waves are the key parameter of interest for safety navigation and for the design of offshore and coastal structures. At the WISE meeting we cover all these aspects with devoted lectures and discussion. WISE is the only conference on wave physics and modeling fully focused on deepening both theoretical and practical aspects of the processes involved and improving the related numerics. Without any written proceedings, but based only on direct oral presentation of the latest results, it avoids any formalism connected to the way the results are passed to the audience. Its declared purpose is to work as a community, aimed at improving the performance and the scientific background of the wave models then used throughout the world for both scientific, military and engineering purposes. During the last three decades the WISE community, together the with previous WAM group, has produced practically all the basic results that form the backbone of the present widely used wave models.
